Bird＇s Nest & Water Cube: Introduction

The Bird's Nest (National Stadium) and the Water Cube (National Aquatics Center) are located in Beijing's Olympic Park. They are the two most iconic venues of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Bird's Nest gets its name from its appearance, which looks like a giant nest woven from tree branches. It covers an area of 258,000 square meters and can seat over 90,000 spectators. During the Olympics, it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies as well as track and field events.

The Water Cube sits right next to the Bird's Nest. It looks like a giant blue, crystal-clear "soap bubble" box, with a design inspired by cellular structures and soap bubbles. Covering 65,000 square meters, it was the world's largest membrane structure project at the time. The two venues — one circular, one square — perfectly echo the traditional Chinese concept of "a round Heaven and a square Earth," with one representing strength and the other gentleness, creating a striking visual contrast.

What Visitors Love About It

What visitors appreciate most about the Bird's Nest and Water Cube is their stunning architectural design and spectacular night views. By day, the intertwined steel structure of the Bird's Nest and the blue bubble-like exterior of the Water Cube are already impressive enough. But at night, when the lights come on, the Bird's Nest glows in golden brilliance while the Water Cube shimmers in changing rainbow colors — the visual effect is absolutely breathtaking.

Many visitors say that just taking a walk in Olympic Park, every snapshot looks like a postcard. And here's the best part — it's free! If you don't go inside the venues, strolling around the square and taking photos costs nothing, which is great for budget-conscious travelers. The two venues are also seen as symbols of China's modern technology and national strength, and many people feel a rush of excitement standing inside, recalling the thrilling moments of the 2008 Olympics.

Quick Tip

The best time to go is around 4:00 PM — you can enjoy the daytime views and then wait for the lights to come on (around 7:40 PM in summer). Bring a tripod for night photos. If you're not going inside the venues, the square is free to enter. If you want to tour the interiors, it's best to buy tickets online in advance. And wear comfortable shoes — Olympic Park is huge, and you'll be doing a lot of walking!
